The state Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding taxpayers that as the April 18 deadline to file personal income tax nears, all New York State tax returns are due whether or not a taxpayer is entitled to a refund or owes taxes.
Those taxpayers who need it can obtain an automatic six-month extension for filing their New York State income tax returns. Filing for an extension does not relieve a filer from paying taxes that are due. In order for an extension to be valid, a taxpayer must properly estimate and pay their estimated tax liability when filing for the extension.
Taxpayers can request an extension online, either through the Department's website or by using e-file software. More information on how to file Form IT-370 can be found at http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/file/ext.htm.
While most extension filers do not owe a payment with their extension, those who do can make their payment by direct debit from a bank account, credit card (with a convenience fee), check or money order.
For those taxpayers who have yet to file their personal income taxes, the department's website provides a vast array of helpful information, including how income-eligible filers can get help in preparing their state tax returns, and in some cases, file their returns at no cost.
