Improve digital literacy skills through various classes at the Potsdam Public Library

POTSDAM – For those who want to improve their digital literacy skills, the Potsdam Public Library offers free classes on computers, the internet, Skype and more with the assistance of college students.

Students have helped hundreds of adults learn to benefit from technology, the library said in an email. However, the arrival of warmer weather means the university semester will end before we know it, and when the students leave for the summer, it will affect the amount of help available at the center.

The center hosts classes on a variety or topics and programs including Microsoft Word, tablets and smart phones, Facetime and various social media networking tools, how to sell items on eBay, and more.

In addition, classes on topics such as identity theft, how to survive on a limited budget, or how to avoid tax scams are offered on occasion. A complete list of classes can be viewed at www.potsdamlibrary.org/.

The center can schedule free individual sessions. Call 265-7230 to inquire whether there is someone who can help with a particular topic or question.

In addition to the Computer Center’s instructional offerings, it also can provide a space for groups to meet or to offer presentations to the public. The center can arrange for a meeting space and if needed, provide computers with internet connection for use during the meeting.

Individuals can use computers and free wi-fi to check email, do online research including free use of Ancestry.com, make online purchases, and more.

Almost all services are free, including classes and individual instruction, but advance registration is required. Call the Potsdam Library at 265-7230 for more info.
