MASSENA -- A freighter that is icebound inside of Snell Lock is Massena remains stuck and is holding up four other ships as a result.
Officials from the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation say the agency has been “working around the clock” since Jan.1 to dislodge the Federal Biscay from the lock where it has been immobilized by heavy ice build-up.
“Work has been underway to melt the ice around the vessel using pressurized steam and additional tug boats have been brought in to assist,” according to a statement from SLSDC. “Progress is being made, but the extreme weather conditions are posing challenges and slowing progress.”
Officials say they intend to get all five remaining vessels, including the Federal Biscay, out of the Seaway system for the winter.
The SLSDC says they will issue an advisory once the vessel has been safely dislodged and navigation is resumed.
