Ice melting, temps rising as many schools delay opening

A winter weather advisory and hazardous weather outlook posted by the National Weather Service won't expire until noon, but the threat of a major icing event continuing appears to have passed, as temperatures across the region have risen above freezing.

Ice continued to coat roads and vehicles in Masena and Ogdensburg, and many schools took no chances today as many secondary roads were slippery, and delayed opening. Highs temps today will be in the mid-40s.

The NWS forecast indicates, however, that the threat could persist for another couple of hours in communities along the St. Lawrence River.

As temperatures cool into the teens tonight, things will freeze up, but there is only a 20 percent chance of more precipitation in the form of snow.

Tomorrow and through Friday, skies will be partly cloudy, allowing the sun to poke through both days. Highs both days will be near 30 degrees, and lows tomorrow night in the low teens.

The partly sunny/partly cloudy trend will continue through Monday, the NWS says, with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens.

The NWS forecast:

Today: Freezing rain likely, possibly mixed with sleet before noon, then a chance of rain showers. Cloudy, with a high near 45. West wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Tonight: A slight chance of rain and snow showers before 10pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 10pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind between 7 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 11. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30. Southwest wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Friday Night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 29.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 16.
