CANTON -- The eighth “Fastest Kid in the North Country” competition took place at St. Lawrence University at the indoor track of the Newell Field House.

Sponsored by the St. Lawrence University Track and Field team, this event capped a full morning of activity at the track that included the Saints own Scarlet versus Brown competition as well as the Special Olympics contests that included both track races and the ever popular turbo javelin throwing event. A food or cash donation was accepted in lieu of an entry fee for the kids, and the donations were recently delivered to the local food pantry by the St. Lawrence University Track and Field team captains.

Hundreds of spectators were on hand to watch nearly 50 entrants in races of 55 or 200 meter distance of the indoor track.

Competitors age 6 and younger contested the straight away sprint of 55 meters and the children aged seven to ten braved one complete lap of the 200-meter oval.

This year’s event served up several close finishes and five new age group records.

Three of the races had finishes that were as closer than .05 seconds.

The closest finish and most hotly contested event was in the 3-year-old category.

The top three finishers all made it across the line under the old record of 15.07 seconds, held by Jack Pitts of Potsdam. Wyatt Francey of Canton took the top honors in 13.50 seconds, .02 seconds ahead of runner up Jacob Hayes also of Canton.

Gigi Sergi was the third kid to cross the line under the old record in that age group, blistering a 13.87 second run of her own.

Zadok Roiger of Canton continued his record-setting performance and now holds two FKNC records at the 6- and the 7-year-old divisions.

He improved the record in the 7-year-old category by almost 2 seconds dropping that standard to 36.57 seconds that was held by Tanner Smith of Waddington since 2012.

The other records to tumble include Austin Dawley of Canton in the 9-year-old division, running 35.56 seconds while James Dawley of Lisbon set the 5-year-old mark at 11.09 seconds. Vincent Edwards of Newport led the 2-and-under group with his 18.76 second winning effort.

Age group champions were awarded a commemorative holiday ornament and bragging rights.

All participants received a candy cane treat along with tons of support from the many family members, college track and field athletes and coaches that were on hand for the day’s events.

Children from Canton, Heuvelton, Massena, Potsdam, Rossie, Lisbon and as far away as Newport, were entered.
