Hundreds of seniors throughout county to pick up diplomas at ceremonies tonight, Saturday

Hundreds of high school students throughout St. Lawrence County will be walking across stages to grab their diplomas this weekend in graduation ceremonies for the class of 2011.

Ceremonies will be held this Friday and Saturday in auditoriums, gymnasiums and concerts halls, while St. Lawrence Central High School plans on its usual outdoor ceremony, if the weather holds.

Schools, dates and times follow:

JUNE 24

• Potsdam High School -- 7:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall, speakers include former social studies teacher and 2003 New York State Teacher of the Year winner Carol Rossi-Fries, who was chosen by students to address the roughly 124 graduates. Valedictorian Sebastian Grimberg and salutatorian John Coleman will also address classmates. Board of Education President Ralph Fuller and Superintendent Patrick Brady will present diplomas and awards. Music will be provided by the high school concert band under the direction of Theresa Witmer, and members of Canta Sera led by Tammara Madeja will sing the school alma mater.

• Williams High School, Canton, in St. Lawrence University’s Appleton Arena, starting at 7 p.m., nearly 100 graduates; senior class President Eric Mende will address the class. Class awards will be presented by High School Principal Mark Passamonte, and Superintendent William Gregory and Board of Education President Barbara Beekman will present diplomas to graduates.Student Kate Savage will lead the national anthem and the high school band will provide music for the event.

• Gouverneur Central High School, 7:30 p.m.

• Colton-Pierrepont Central School, approximately 21 graduates will receive their diplomas in the high school auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. Class valedictorian Brooke Baker and salutatorian Kelly Sampier will speak to fellow seniors. Superintendent Martin Bregg, who retires this year, will present diplomas and awards, assisted by School Board President Jeffrey Angleberger and high school Principal Randy Johnson. The high school vocal jazz and jazz band will play for the ceremonies, and Class of 2011 parents will present a slideshow.

• Hermon-DeKalb Central School, about 25 seniors will get their diplomas from school board members in ceremonies starting at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Valedictorian and salutatorian won’t be announced until a couple of days before commencement. Both will speak to the students. Mark White, school principal, will perform the awards ceremony, and assist School Board President Ronald Smith, and board members Michael Perry and Crystal Simmons to give out diplomas.

• St. Lawrence Central High School, about 73 graduates will attend commencement ceremonies starting at 6 p.m. at the traditional West Lawn gathering, or inside in the high school gym, if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Class President Levi Hull will greet the class, before valedictorian Martin Fregoe and salutatorian Kayla Kesner address classmates. Principal Tracy Davison will make award presentations. She, along with Board of Education President James Lattimer and Superintendent Stephen Putman will distribute diplomas. Music will be provided by the high school band.

• Madrid-Waddington Central High School, about 63 seniors get their diplomas at ceremonies starting at 8 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Superintendent Lynn Roy will make opening remarks. Valedictorian Justin Pierce and salutatorian Shelby MacIntosh will address their classmates. Principal Joseph Ruddy and school board vice president Douglas McKnight will preside over the awarding of diplomas. The high school band will perform for the gathering.

• Heuvelton Central High School, 8 p.m., auditorium.

• Lisbon Central High School, 6:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, JUNE 25

• Massena Central High School, 1 p.m., high school gymnasium.

• Ogdensburg Free Academy, noon.

• Norwood-Norfolk Central School 7 p.m., in SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall, with 66 graduates. High school principal Robin Fetter and School Board Pres. David Flint will present diplomas and scholarship awards. Remarks will come from Superintendent Elizabeth Kirnie, Flint, valedictorian Vanessa Foster, salutatorian Victoria Hall, and class president Jessica Dean, with the commencement address by the student’s choice for the honor, English teacher Lynn Treers. Chelsey Doran will sing the National Anthem. Seniors will continue the annual ritual of singing a class song, and the gathering will view a slide show of senior year.

• Parishville-Hopkinton Central High School, about 45 graduates will receive their diplomas in the auditorium in a ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. Superintendent Darin Saiff will preside as valedictorian John Gilbert and salutatorian Joshua Lavelle, and class president Ryan Jacot address classmates. High school special education teacher Kristen Wallace has been chosen by the class to give the commencement address.High School Principal Michael Fellion and School Board President Ward Remington will help present diplomas. The Parishville-Hopkinton Central School Band, directed by Don Cannamela, provides music for the ceremonies.

• Morristown Central High School, 7 p.m., high school gymnasium.

• Clifton-Fine Central High School, 11 a.m., school auditorium.

• Edwards-Knox Central High School, 7 p.m., high school gymnasium.
