Hospital honors Canton town, village elected officials

CANTON -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s board members and officials presented the CPH Board of Directors Service Award to the Village and Town of Canton at a special ceremony June 1.

The award is the highest honor bestowed by the hospital and is given annually to an individual or organization that has improved the health of the communities CPH serves.

“We are pleased to honor two groups of elected officials whose careful and thoughtful deliberations resulted in support for the construction of the St. Lawrence Medical Campus in Canton,” said Mark Cornett, Chair of the CPH Board of Directors.

“These officials exemplify service to their communities: they worked across municipal boundaries and across party affiliations to do what was ultimately in the best interests of Canton,” said Cornett.

Cornett noted that the new medical complex is more than just a building. “These groups’ collaboration resulted in increased access to the care most needed by the people of Canton,” he said.

“The result is an increase in jobs; these are medical staff and employees who purchase goods in Canton and have even purchased homes in Canton,” he added.

“Canton is now a hub for specialty care in St. Lawrence County with people traveling from all over the county and indeed beyond to see the county’s only rheumatologist, only allergist, only endocrinologist, and the largest group of orthopedic surgeons in the county,” Cornett said. “This building is a game-changer for access to care and the Village and Town did a great deal of work to help get us there.”

Past Canton recipients of the Board of Directors Service Award include the late Canton resident Peter VandeWater, Donald Thompson of the Canton Rescue Squad, the late Dr. Jon Kay, a Canton-area physician, and physician’s assistant JoAnne Scott, who practices with Dr. Gregory Healey in Canton.

The Board of Directors from a slate of nominations chooses awardees. Nominations are sought in February. The CPH website is www.cphospital.org.
