DEPEYSTER -- A horse was killed and two men were transported to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center after an Amish buggy was struck by a vehicle Thursday evening.
Ogdensburg-based state police said Richard E. Smithers, of Ogdensburg, was heading west on Route 184 at about 5:30 p.m. when he stuck a buggy, heading in the same direct, operated by Samuel Miller, of Heuvelton.
Police said the buggy was destroyed and Miller was injured. Miller was transported to CHMC after complaining of back and shoulder pain.
State police said Miller's horse was euthanized at the scene.
Smithers, was also transported to CHMC for evaluation.
Troopers said Smithers was ticketed for following to closely and the incident remains under investigation.
Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department, Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, St. Lawrence County shefiff's deputies and state police were called to the scene.
