HOPKINTON -- A Hopkinton youth was credited by firefighters with saving lives after he notified homeowners that their garage was on fire and called 911 on the evening of Jan. 15.

Carson McCargar was returning home from a trip to Massena with his mother and noticed something that did not appear right, according to Hopkinton-Fort Jackson Assistant Chief Joseph Van Ells.

“He told his mother that they had just passed a garage that was on fire on State Highway 420 in the town of Norfolk. Upon their return to the scene it was found that the garage was in fact fully involved. Young Carson and his mother notified the owners who were unaware of the situation and called 911,” Van Ells said.

“If not for the outstanding acts of this young man, the situation could have ended much worse,” he said.

Van Ells said members and officers of the fire department awarded Carson with a certificate of excellence, thanking him for his efforts, which ultimately saved the home from burning in addition to the garage.

“We decided to award this certificate of excellence to Carson McCargar for undoubtedly saving the house and lives of this family,” he said. “Carson is a young member of our community and almost a guaranteed future member. His father, Jared McCargar, is a past assistant chief of our department and also a past member of West Stockholm.”
