A Hogansburg man is facing federal charges for allegedly possessing close to one million untaxed cigarettes.

Ian Tarbell, 43, is charged with possession of contraband cigarettes, failing to maintain information about the shipment, sale and distribution of more than 10,000 cigarettes and refusing to pay and evading the payment of a tax, according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York William Hochul Jr.

Tarbell was stopped Feb. 16 in Pembroke, N.Y. by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. He was driving a truck with a trailer attached that allegedly contained more than 900,000 untaxed and unstamped cigarettes, according to Hochul.

Tarbell appeared in federal court on April 13. He was arraigned by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and released on $100,000 bond, according to Hochul.

The case is being investigated by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Gary Maha, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Delano A. Reid of the New York Field Division, according to Hochul.
