HEUVELTON — Heuvelton Central School students and staff contributed cards, drawings, poems, and letters to send to students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School following the school shooting on Feb. 14.

The expression of sympathy for the victims and survivors is meant as a show of solidarity, according to organizers.

High School Social Studies Teacher Maggie Whalen put a call out to staff and students to contribute on Feb. 15.

“I've offered to send anything my students are willing to put in the box, and wanted to extend that to anyone. I know there is nothing that I could say or do that would make any of this better, but I feel strongly that reaching out to those students and staff is important,” said Whalen.

“I feel that instead of a post on my personal social media, I would like to send my message directly to the victims. Opening a box full of cards and letters might help someone. I feel strongly I need to do something to help.”

According to Whalen, after the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, her students created over 300 paper snowflakes and sent them to the school to decorate to welcome the students when they returned.

A box of cards, drawings, letters, and other items was sent to the school before staff and students left for winter break on Friday.
