Team “Healthy in Heuvelton” won first place in the middle school division with a “Central Valley Harvest Bake” recipe.

The first North Country Jr. Iron Chef competition was held recently, with students from Heuvelton, Potsdam, Canton and Seaway Tech taking home honors.

The cooking competition, sponsored by the Health Initiative, was designed for middle and high school students throughout the North Country. Teams competed to prepare a healthy meal with local and commodity ingredients that could be prepared in a school cafeteria.

The Heuvelton Central School team “Healthy in Heuvelton” took home first place in the middle school division with their “Central Valley Harvest Bake” recipe.

Second place honors went to a Brushton-Moira team, while Potsdam’s “Stone Cold Chefs” took home third place honors for a veggie pocket recipe.

Canton’s “Canton Golden Chefs” took home an honorable mention for their bean and cheese burrito with pico de gallo.

In the high school division the Seaway Tech BOCES team took third place for a vegetarian korma dish. A second Seaway team, the “Seaway Tracker” earned an honorable mention for a pasta primavera with light marinara sauce.

The dishes were judged by a panel of judges from both the food and educational industries from a seven-county region.

Some teams plan to serve their dishes to their local school board, wellness committee and in the school lunchrooms.
