HEUVELTON – As concerns over the new Common Core standards continue to worry parents, students and teachers, Heuvelton Central School brought in outside help to ease the transition.
Heuvelton held a “Math Common Core Informational Night” for parents Wednesday.
Led by education consultant Becky Duprey, the event offered tips for parents interested in helping their children meet the new requirements.
Duprey gave an overview of the new standards and offered strategies that parents could use to help support their children at home.
Parents learned math games developed by Duprey, while children gathered in the cafeteria to work on arts and crafts while their parents attended grade specific sessions.
Following each session, the parents and their children joined their child’s teacher to play and practice the math games.
Each parent who attended received a free math kit for home use.
“It was very busy here,” Superintendent Susan Todd said of the event. “A lot of people attended and parents appeared very happy and grateful with the opportunity to get the overview from Ms. Duprey.”
