HEUVELTON – A barn fire at 251 McIlwee Rd. early Monday morning claimed the lives of over 360 animals at the Clifton and Marie Cooke farm.
The livestock included 39 pigs, 300 chickens, 6 turkeys, two cows and 20 ducks. Mr. Cook sold the livestock at local markets as a business.
St. Lawrence County Fire Investigators believe a heat lamp in a chicken coop may have been the cause of the blaze, which was reported at 4:34 a.m. Monday when a neighbor noticed the barn was on fire.
The Heuvelton Fire Department and Ogdensburg Rescue Squad responded the fire, with mutual aid from Rensselaer Falls and Morristown fire departments. Morley and Richville fire departments were on standby.
When firefighters arrived, they found the barn fully engulfed in flames. They were still on the scene this morning.
The barn was a total loss, but was insured, according to investigators.
No injuries were reported.
