GOUVERNEUR – A Hermon woman was jailed Sunday night after police officers discovered cocaine packaged for sale and other drugs in her vehicle, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force.
Gouverneur village police stopped Valerie A. Cleveland 37, of 124 Main St., Apt. 1, Hermon, at about 6:45 p.m. As officers approached her vehicle, she made “furtive movements with her hands and was attempting to destroy or hide evidence,” police said.
Police said Cleveland refused to get out of the vehicle when ordered by officers and was then taken into custody.
Officers located prescription pills and crack cocaine packaged for sale hidden in the vehicle after searching it.
Cleveland was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance Third Degree (B-Felony), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance Seventh Degree (A-Misdemeanor), Criminal Possession Controlled Substance not in Original Container (Violation), Resisting Arrest (A-Misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation Third Degree (Misdemeanor), and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs (Misdemeanor).
Cleveland was arraigned before Town Justice Young and sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility.
A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 1, deputies said.
Assisting in the investigation were the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Canton Village Police Department and state police.
The investigation continues and more arrests are pending, police said.
