Hermon-DeKalb recognizes members of class of 2014 with awards, scholarships

DEKALB JUNCTION -- Hermon-DeKalb Central School gave out numerous awards and scholarships at its class of 2014 graduation.

Desiree Watson and Cameron Hance received Student Council Awards. They are given to two seniors who have demonstrated outstanding citizenship during the past four years.

Presley Bryant and Cameron Hance Hermon-DeKalb PeeWee League Outstanding Senior in athletics awards.

Cody Gambrel received the Junction Building Supply Award is given to the outstanding senior in the Electronics field.

Cameron Hance and Garrett Villeneuve received Hermon-DeKalb Alumni Association. They are for seniors who have demonstrated responsibility and leadership.

Cameron Hance received the Lifetouch Award. it goes to a senior in recognition of achievement in photography or journalism.

Ethan Daniels and Chanise Petra received the Hermon-DeKalb Teachers Association Award. It is presented to the senior male and female student whose academic averages have improved the most during the past four years.

The William S. Hamilton Memorial Scholarships consists of two awards. The first award goes to a graduating senior for post-secondary work in an applied field and went to Presley Bryant. The second award goes to a graduating senior entering an institution in a liberal arts major with preference given to pursuing a professional degree. It went to Garrett Villeneuve.

Bethany Garvey received the Lloyd R. Redmond Memorial Scholarship Award.

Kasey O’Donnell received the DeKalb-Hermon Senior Citizens award. It is in memory of Janet Shatraw and given to a graduating senior who exhibits interest in serving the community. Hunter Hitchman and Rebecca LeMunyon received grants from the William McKinley Grimshaw and Viola Armin Grimshaw Scholarship Fund. It is given based on attitude and good citizenship.

Garrett Villeneuve received the Philip A. Babcock Scholarship. it is awarded to a student attending SUNY Canton to study science.

Eli Smith received an award in honor of Jeffrey B. Hamilton, a 1964 graduate of Hermon-DeKalb Central. Jeffrey spent his entire career in military aviation and aviation maintenance. He was always helpful to friends, family and strangers.

Presley Bryant received the Jim and Betty Brice Memorial Scholarship. It recognizes community service, education, and family values.

Cody Gambrel received the Lillian Fleming Memorial Scholarship. Lillian was a retired teacher from Hermon-DeKalb, who touched many lives during her career. She continues to foster education through the scholarship.

Shelby Broeders received the Elaine Eells Scholarship. it is awarded to a Hermon-DeKalb senior pursuing his or her education in a health or science-related field.

Desiree Watson received the Kiwanis Club of Canton Award. It is given to a student who has shown outstanding character in community service, with special emphasis given to volunteer work with younger children.

E-Edie’s Incorporated gave awards in memory of Vernon and Deanna Forbes and Tim Clary to Cody Gambrel and Eli Smith. The award is for two students who have shown strong interest and aptitude in computing.

Cameron Hance and Eli Smith received the Joseph Russell Memorial Awards. It is given to two graduates who demonstrate a love of outdoor activities.

Rebecca LeMunyon received the Trooper Shawn W. Snow Award. It is given to a Hermon-DeKalb senior who regularly gives selflessly by helping others.

Desiree Watson received the Ron and Shirley Turbide Scholarship. It is awarded to a student with a post-secondary plan to attend college as their immediate goal in the life-long process, making knowledge a part of personal growth.

Cameron Hance received the Powell Memorial Scholarship. Duff Powell and his wife, Eileen, were life-long DeKalb residents and graduated from DeKalb Junction High School. Duff worked 33 years at the school. Their four children, Dennis, Warren, Kathy and Sheila, all graduated from Hermon-DeKalb and provide this scholarship to a graduating senior.

Presley Bryant and Eli Smith received the DeKalb-Hermon Senior Citizens awards. They are given to students dedicated to working with seniors.

Presley Bryant received the Dorothy V. Carter Scholarship for outstanding achievement in a career and technical program. Carter was an advocate of nursing and EMT services and wanted to assist students in pursuit of medical training.

Shelby Broeders received the Douglas Dusharm and Joe Russell Memorial Award. It is presented to a senior who displays kindness, compassion and generosity toward others and is entering the medical field.

Hunter Hitchman received the Empire-Hermon Chapter #68, Order of the Eastern Star award.

Garrett Villeneuve received the Faye Baxter Memorial Scholarship Award, given by the CSEA St. Lawrence Educational Local 873.

Ethan Daniels and Chanise Petra received DeKalb AMVETS Post 11 awards. They are given to a senior male and female student whose averages improved the most throughout high school.

Garrett Villeneuve received the DeKalb-Junction Volunteer Fire Department Memorial Award, which is given in memory of dead members.

Cody Gambrel received an Ogdensburg Rotary Club, Inc. achievement award.

Presley Bryant received the Babcock Memorial Award. It is given to the senior who has maintained a satisfactory scholastic record, participated in school affairs, and who has fully used his or her abilities and talents during high school.

Cameron Hance received the Pepsi Cola Fine Arts Award. It goes to the senior who has contributed the most to the school's fine arts program.

Cameron Hance and Rebecca LeMunyon received Community Bank, N.A. awards. They are presented to students who demonstrated responsibility and consistent effort in academics and extra-curricular activities.

Shelby Broeders and Bethany Garvey received the Frank F. and Katie Oakes Young Memorial Award. It goes to two females who have demonstrated outstanding improvement in using the English language.

Cody Gambrel, Cameron Hance and Rebecca LeMunyon received the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence. It is given to students who throughout high school have maintained at least a 90 average in the core subjects and scored at least 90 on standardized English or math achievement tests.

Rebecca LeMunyon received the Stephen Douglas McQueer Scholarship in music. It is presented to a student who demonstrates aptitude in music and shows potential for success with musical endeavor.

Adam Harmer received the Mary Edna McQueer Scholarship in art. It is presented to a member of the graduating class who demonstrates aptitude in art and shows potential for success with artistic endeavor.

Desiree Watson received the Angelina Conklin Scholarship. It goes to a graduating senior who plans to study teaching.

Cameron Hance, Hunter Hitchman and Rebecca LeMunyon received the St. Lawrence University Augsbury/North Country Scholar award.

Cameron Hance received the New York State Comptroller Achievement Award. It is given to a student who has shown academic excellence and potential for leadership.

Cameron Hance and Rebecca LeMunyon received the New York State Department of Education Scholarship for Academic Excellence. It is awarded each year to two students from each high school for their outstanding academic accomplishments.

Hunter Hitchman received the Harriet Jenne Memorial Award. It is given to a student who excelled in athletics throughout high school and has the opportunity to continue this endeavor in college. Jenne was a graduate of Hermon High School in 1943 and an athlete into her seventies.

Cody Gambrel received the Joseph Russell and Laura Shattuck Memorial Scholarship. It is presented to a senior pursuing a career in teaching.

Courtney Harrington received a grant from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, Inc. Statewide Scholarship Program. It provides scholarships to high school students who are dependents of union members. •

Cameron Hance received the SAANYS Scholarship Award. it is given to a graduating senior who will attend college to study education and has shown high academic achievement, leadership, and participation in school activities and community service.

Cameron Hance received an award from the Sons of AMVETS Post 11, DeKalb Junction. It goes to a student furthering their education in music. The recipient of this award is:

Crystal Sawyer received an award for Academic Excellence in Economics.

Presley Bryant received the A & L Stransky Memorial Scholarship. It is awarded to a student entering the medical field. Kate and John Stransky give this scholarship in memory of the Stransky girls, who died from a genetic disorder.

Rebecca LeMunyon received a grant from the DeKalb Housing Development Fund. It is in memory of dead company members. It is based on community involvement, school citizenship and intent to further education.

Rebecca LeMunyon received the Ladies Auxiliary of the DeKalb AMVETS Post 11 Award. It is given to a senior attend college to study music.
