Senior 4-H youth Carter Pierce of St. Lawrence County delivered his presentation entitled ‘The History of Hershey’ at Hermon-DeKalb School.
DEKALB JUNCTION -- Hermon-DeKalb Central School recently hosted 4-H youth from across the North County for a district-wide public presentation competition.
On Saturday, May 4, 34 young people from St. Lawrence, Clinton, Franklin, Lewis, and Jefferson counties spoke on a variety of topics such as the best racing horses of all time and toxic plant species.
Presenters were divided into juniors (ages 9-12) and seniors (ages 13-19) and were judged on several factors.
Although the event was a competition, it is also a learning experience and an opportunity to build and enhance public speaking skills.
For junior participants, this was the end of the competition.
But for seniors Carmen Kenney, Carter Pierce, Josiah McCarthy, and Riley Green, all from St. Lawrence County, the next stop is Cornell University, where the top scorers will represent the North Country District at the state-level event Saturday, May 18.
