A heat advisory is in effect for St. Lawrence County today from 2 until 8 p.m. with a heat index of 97 degrees expected today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The high today will be near 91 with hear index values as high as 97, forecasters say. There is a 20 percent chance of rain after 2 p.m.

The overnight low will be around 72 with a 30 percent chance of rain after 8 p.m., NWS says.

Tuesday will see a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high near 82, the service says.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors, especially older adults who might live alone, to ensure

they are able to stay cool.
