Heat advisory issued for Friday and Saturday, heat index values of 98 predicted for St. Lawrence Valley

Heat index values of up to 98 degrees, due to temperatures in the lower to mid 90s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s are predicted for that time period. Areas of the Champlain Valley are expected to experience heat index values of up to 102 degrees during this time.

The highest heat index values will occur between noon and 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

High heat index values pose a significant risk for heat stress and heat-related illness for everyone, especially those vulnerable populations without air conditioning and those spending significant time outdoors, the weather service said.

Heat-related illnesses can occur very quickly. Pets are also susceptible to heat illness. Additionally car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors.

The National Weather Services advises residents to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

The forecast for the rest of the week is expected to be cooler.
