Hearings on Area Code 315 plans set, but none in St. Lawrence County

Several hearings on adding another Area Code in the 315 area have been set, but none in St. Lawrence County.

The state Public Service Commission is currently considering two options. One would give the existing area a new code “overlaid” over the existing area, so that the current 315 area will have another three-digit code and new numbers would generally be given the new Area Code. That would mean people in the current 315 area would dial the whole number including Area Code to reach another phone in the area, even if it’s across the street.

The second plan would be to divide the current 315 area into two, leaving part of it with the 315 area and the rest would get the new code.

The commission will hold public hearings in Utica, Watertown and Syracuse to receive public comment on options for area code relief in the 315 area.

The area code region currently serves all or part of 18 northern and central New York counties.

The hearings will be Monday, Aug. 5 at the Utica State Office Building at 2 and 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown at 2 and 6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the Hughes State Office Building in Syracuse at 2 and 6 p.m.

Staffers will describe the relief options being considered, followed by a question and answer period.
