Health Initiative grant will improve nutrition of food distributed by Potsdam Snack Pack Program

POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Snack Pack Program recently received a grant from the Health Initiative's Creating Healthy Schools and Communities project to improve the nutrition of the food items distributed to participating children.

The Potsdam program has become a member of the Food Bank of Central New York, a major provider of food for North Country food pantries and Neighborhood Center food programs.

“Because the Food Bank has a healthy food procurement policy, and we have written our own healthy food policy, the Snack Pack Program will now have access to better quality food at a substantially reduced cost, delivered right to our doorstep,” said Potsdam Snack Pack Program Coordinator Laurell Brault.

The grant from the Health Initiative, funded by the New York State Department of Health, was used to purchase additional shelving, storage totes, a hand truck, and a refrigerator. With a refrigerator, the program will now be able to distribute fruits and vegetables.

Brault expressed gratitude “for the Health Initiative's grant, and for the continued support of the New Hope Community Church where the Snack Pack Program is housed.”

The Health Initiative is currently seeking additional backpack feeding programs to work with on developing their own healthy food policies. Interested program managers should contact Karen Bage, Community Coordinator at the Health Initiative at (315) 261-4760 ext. 228 or karen@gethealthyslc.org to inquire about eligibility and possible grant funding.
