Hazardous weather warning for St. Lawrence Valley Thursday: high winds, snow squalls

A hazardous weather outlook for the St. Lawrence Valley and the North Country is warning of snow squalls and high winds Thursday night.

The National Weather Service office in Burlington says that a cold front approaching the region is bringing light snow showers today, and it will move through the North Country Thursday night, accompanied by more snow showers or snow squalls and northwest winds that could gust to 35 mph, bringing wind-chill temperatures down. An inch or two of snow could fall in a relatively short time, the NWS says.

The gusty winds could kick up the snow causing reduced visibility for drivers, perhaps even producing whiteout conditions..

For the rest of today, snow showers are expected to abate before possibly picking up again tonight before skies clear. Lows will be in the mid-teens, and a west wind will increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts to about 25 mph.

Tomorrow it will be warm enough – nearing 40 degrees -- that the predicted precipitation could start as rain in the afternoon before the cold front drops temps to the single digits tomorrow night.
