POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall has been shut down as hazardous material teams from multiple counties investigate an alleged ammonia leak.

SUNY Potsdam spokeswoman Alexandra Jacobs said the leak probably stemmed from the cooling source in the ice area.

"To the best of our knowledge that's the only source of ammonia in the building," she said.

Jacobs said an employee discovered the smell at around 6 this morning while performing a routine walk-through.

Jacobs said it is unclear what caused the leak, or how much of the chemical was spilled.

"The fire department is there now has everything contained," she said. "We are waiting for hazardous materials teams to investigate and assess the leak."

Jacobs said one of the teams has experience with the cooling system at SUNY Potsdam's ice arena.

Jacobs said the athletic center was evacuated and remains closed. She said all activities at the facility have been canceled until further notice.

Jacobs said no one was at risk for injury.

"Everyone has been advised to stay clear of the building at this time."

The following release issued by SUNY Potsdam:

Due to an ammonia leak in a mechanical room, Maxcy Hall is closed. All classes and activities held in Maxcy Hall will be canceled until further notice today, Tuesday, August 27.

The College is working closely with responding agencies to address this situation as quickly as possible, to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors.

In the interest of safety, all are encouraged to stay away from Maxcy Hall at this time. A follow-up message will be sent to campus when it is safe to re-enter the building.
