MADRID -- The St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum’s featured program on July 28 will be "Harvesting 101, 1940’s Style."

The program will provide instruction and demonstration on harvesting the rye crops now maturing at the Museum farm, 1755 State Highway 345, Madrid.

The demonstration will begin at 10 a.m. at the field near the red Collection Building. After a lunch break, the harvest will continue at the small field of rye next to State Highway 310, Madrid. Admission is free.

Instructor for the demonstration will be John Mouthorp of Madrid and friends. Before harvesting begins, Mouthorp will explain how the combine mows and threshes the rye, cleans the seeds, and pours the grain into bags. Featured will be the Museum’s 1940 Model 40 Allis Chalmers Combine, designed and built to serve small farms as WWII was getting underway over 70 years ago. Gary Crowe of Heuvelton Equipment, who passed away in 2012, restored the combine.

This program is designed for persons of all ages, interested in learning how grains are harvested and watching a vintage machine still able to get the job done. Come and get up close and dusty, as you learn where the rye in rye bread comes from.

In the event of rain, the harvesting will be done Sunday, July 29 beginning at 1 p.m., conditions permitting.

The event will also be a workday for members and friends of the Museum. Many chores can be accomplished by willing hands. The museum is managed and operated entirely by volunteers.

Work begins at 9 a.m. and concludes about lunchtime.

The next program at the museum will be the Antique Truck Show presented by the Northern Empire and Upper Canada Chapters of the Antique Truck Club of America on Aug. 17-19.

Trucks will arrive Friday, Aug. 17, with a parade at 5 p.m., which will end at the Ole Smokehouse Restaurant in Madrid Springs. On Saturday, Aug 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Show will continue with lots of classic trucks on display as well as the Museum’s exhibit building. Public is invited, no admission, though donations will be welcome.

Show will wrap up early Sunday morning so plan to come early that day.

The Museum will continue its open house schedule on Aug. 11 and 25.

Visitors will be able to see up close many of the implements and inventions that made life in the North Country more comfortable and productive over the last 200 years. For more information, visit the Museum’s website www.slpowermuseum.com.
