HAMMOND – Hammond Town Council will meet Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. to discuss overriding the state property tax cap.
The state mandated tax cap was implemented in 2011 as a way to decrease property taxes in New York State. However, municipalities may vote to override the tax cap to impose higher tax rates. Although the tax cap is referred to as a 2 percent cap, it can actually be more restrictive as it is based on inflation rates and other components.
This year the state comptroller predicted the cap will actually be closer to 1 percent. The cap is also fluctuates between municipalities as well with allowances based on health care and retirement costs also considered.
The council will also be discussing union contracts and is scheduled to do so in executive session.
Other agenda items include the Chippewa Bay parking lot, town office building, swimming report and recycled tire report.
