HAMMOND -- A Hammond Central School student has been charged with possessing a homemade explosive device in a locker in school.
State Police were called to the school at 1:57 p.m. Tuesday, after school officials discovered the device in a gym locker.
School officials started a search after they were alerted by other students that a student possessed the device.
Police recovered a test tube containing black powder and a fuse. A machete and hunting knife were also recovered.
The student, whose name is being withheld due to age, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and released to the custody of parents.
The State Police Bomb Disposal Unit responded and secured the device. No one was injured.
The student was given an appearance ticket to appear in St. Lawrence County Family Court.
