HAMMOND -- Several local high school students have just returned from the Reality Check of New York Summit at Cazenovia College in Central New York.
Hammond Central School students Dawson Simons, 16; Jessica Brown, 15; Dana Burns, 15; and Hannah Preston, 15, with their program coordinators Chelsea Bartlett, Joseph Boswell and Jennifer Brown, joined 150 other youth from around the state at the summit.
Reality Check representatives at the summit worked on plans for #SeenEnoughTobacco Day, scheduled for Oct. 13.
#SeenEnoughTobacco Day is hosted by Reality Check of New York in the various Reality Check chapters around the state.
RC youth will host tobacco-free-themed community activities and lead an online campaign to engage and educate community members and leaders about reducing youth exposure to tobacco marketing.
Reality Check is a group of youth advocates, with chapters in many area high schools, who work to raise awareness of what they consider the deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. A news release from the organization says they “seeks change in their communities through grassroots mobilization and education.”
Reality Check in St. Lawrence County is associated with Advancing Tobacco Free Communities of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties, located at the Seaway Valley Prevention Council in Ogdensburg.
