HAMMOND -- A fire early Thursday morning left three people homeless including two children after a blaze destroyed a double-wide trailer located at 840 South Hammond Rd., according to St. Lawrence County Fire Investigator Joe Lacks.
“The owner of the home, Amber L. Evans, had just returned home from work and noticed that lights were not working in her home and she heard some crackling,” Lacks said.
Evans then reportedly called a neighbor and together they discovered that there was a fire in the ceiling, he said.
The cause of the fire was reportedly narrowed down to an electrical event or a pellet stove located in the living room.
“The roof collapsed on firefighters but no injuries were sustained,” Lacks said.
The house was determined to be a total loss, Lacks said.
Evans lived there with two daughters, ages 6 and 11, he said.
“Most of their belongings were unusable,” Lacks said
Evans was reportedly going to receive assistance from family.
“It was a good turnout by firefighters who had to battle the blaze and temperatures around 10 below, he said.
Firefighters from Morristown, Hammond, Oxbow and Redwood were reportedly on scene for around three hours battling the fire.
