State Sen. Joseph Griffo (R-C-IP, Rome), has launched an on-line petition drive to support passage of a property tax cap measure.
The Senate passed Governor Cuomo’s property tax cap legislation with bipartisan support earlier this year. In recent days, the Governor has urged the Assembly to act on the tax cap bill.
Griffo is offering the “Pass The Cap” petition online through his Senate website and Facebook page. People can also access the petition at PassTheTaxCap.com.
The current property tax cap bill would limit a school district's tax levy, not including the taxes necessary to support the local share of capital expenditures.
Under the bill, a tax levy could increase by up to two percent or the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less, Griffo says.
If enacted, the law would take effect for the 2012-13 school year.
The bill also provides for the same cap to apply to taxes levied by municipal governments.
