MASSENA – St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Investigators have arrested the grandmother of the five-year-old boy who perished in a structure fire at 2224 State Highway 420 on Feb. 22, 2017.

Shari L. Caza, 54, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor. Investigators allege that Caza had put the child to bed in an upstairs bedroom and subsequently locked the door from the outside, making it unable to be opened from within.

A fire broke out in the upstairs hallway a short distance from the bedroom soon after the child was put to bed, said a press release from the sheriff’s department.

Massena Fire Department put out the fire, and the child was taken from the room and transported to Massena Memorial Hospital by Massena Rescue. The five-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The investigation is continuing, reported the sheriff’s department.

County sheriff’s investigators have been assisted on the case by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation team, New York State Fire Investigators and the Albany-based Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Caza was ticketed, released and is scheduled to appear in Massena Town Court on Sept. 27.
