CANTON — A Gouverneur woman was found guilty of attempted arson Wednesday stemming from an incident that took place June 7, 2017.

Mary Yeardon otherwise known as, Mary McIntosh, was convicted after a trial of third-degree attempted arson, felony, according to the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office.

The trial was held in St. Lawrence County Court before Hon. Jerome J. Richards.

McIntosh reportedly caused damaged to a porch of an apartment house after lighting a piece of paper on fire, placing it on a gasoline can which also caught fire. The fire caused damaged to the floor and did so while other tenants were inside the dwelling, police said.

“The defendant’s actions put people’s lives at risk,” said St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary M. Pasqua. “This conviction will send a message that such reckless and dangerous behavior will not be tolerated by this office.”

Sentencing was set for Oct. 22.

The defendant was remanded to the county jail to await sentencing.

The case was prosecuted by Joshua Haberkornhalm and Sasha Mascarenhas, assistant district attorney’s.

“Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Gouverneur Police Department, the Gouverneur Fire Department, and Fire Investigator Thomas Conklin the evidence provided to the Judge proved the attempted arson,” said Haberkornhalm. “The judge ensured a fair trial, and his verdict serves the ends of justice.”
