Gouverneur woman charged with DWI after car crashes, goes airborne, lands in driveway

GOUVERNEUR -- A Gouverneur woman was injured after she allegedly drove over guide rails and became airborne before crashing into a driveway while driving under the influence, according to state police.

Shelby D. Desormeaux, 23 was charged with driving while intoxicated following an accident at 8:27 a.m. on U.S. Highway 11. She was also charged with pot possession.

Troopers say Desormeaux was operating a 2007 Dodge Caliber traveling north on U.S. Highway 11 when her vehicle exited the east shoulder striking the guide rails.

The vehicle went over the guide rails struck an embankment and then became airborne and finally came to rest partially in a driveway near Old State Route 11.

Desormeaux reported chest and rib pain, an abrasion on her left knee, and minor facial bleeding.

She was transported by Gouverneur Rescue to the Gouverneur Hospital.

Desormeaux was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. She submitted to a blood test at the hospital to determine her drug and/or alcohol content.

Troopers also discovered that Desormeaux was in possession of approximately 11 grams of marijuana.

She was issued an appearance ticket for Unlawful Possession of marijuana, and a traffic ticket for failure to maintain lane, returnable to the Town of Gouverneur Court on Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.

Further charges are pending results of the blood test.
