CANTON – A resolution that would have directed the budget officer to reduce operating costs by nearly $3 million failed 13-1 last Monday.
Gouverneur Republican Travis Dann presented a resolution requesting the county’s budget officer to present a budget with $2.83 million in cuts.
The resolution had no support aside from Dann, but would have directed the officer to include a list of programs and cuts that were removed in order to reduce the levy.
Dann’s resolution claimed that the current process in place forces legislators “to make cuts to a budget which they may not be totally familiar.”
Dann’s proposal would “allow legislators to vote to continue programs in a decisive manner,” the resolution says.
According to his resolution the $2.83 million cuts are necessary due to rising health care costs and decrease in sales tax collections.
