Gouverneur native Brian Leonard signs with New Orleans Saints

GOUVERNEUR -- Gouverneur native Brian Leonard signed Wednesday to play running back for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL).

Leonard was one of four players who tried out for the team on Tuesday.

Mikel Leshoure, Andre Brown, and Tim Hightower also worked out for the Saints on Tuesday but none were offered contracts.

Leonard, 30, has played seven seasons in the NFL after playing collegiate football for Rutgers.

He was drafted in 2007 by the St. Louis Rams.

He played in 53 games for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2009-12 and also spent time with the Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Leonard played 16 games for Tampa last season and set career highs in carries and rushing yards, although the totals were modest for the longtime reserve. He also caught 29 passes for 179 yards, which was a familiar role for him in Cincinnati and St. Louis as well on his way to compiling more receiving than rushing yards in his NFL career.

Injuries could be a factor as reserve running back Edwin Baker left last Sunday’s game with a concussion.

The Saints (4-5) and Bengals (5-3-1) play Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
