GOUVERNEUR -- A Gouverneur man was jailed on $50,000 bail following the death of a seven-month-old child, Gouverneur-based state police said.

Gary L. McKenzie, 22, was charged with reckless assault of a child and child endangerment after troopers responded to an “unresponsive child” call at 1:39 a.m. Tuesday at Hailesboro Street apartment.

Upon arrival, troopers said McKenzie was attempting to resuscitate the infant Braylin W. Chambers.

Gouverneur Rescue Squad transported Chambers to University Hospital in Syracuse where he was admitted and placed on life support.

Chambers was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Troopers said McKenzie was charged and sent to St. Lawrence County jail on $50,000 bail or $100,000 bond following a preliminary investigation.

Troopers said the investigation is on going with assistance from the St. Lawrence County District Attorney's Office.

An autopsy was scheduled for today at the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office in Syracuse.
