Gouverneur firefighters to soon distribute fundraising 'coin cards'

GOUVERNEUR -- The Gouverneur Fire Department will soon distribute “coin cards” for its annual fundraising, and has scheduled an open house to show their appreciation of the community.

Volunteers will be dropping off donation envelopes on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the Village of Gouverneur.

Residents outside of the village will receive their donation envelopes by mail during that week.

Pickup of the envelopes will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 7 within the village.

Residents outside the village may send their donations with the enclosed return envelope by mail or drop them off at the Gouverneur Fire Station on Rt. 11 South or at the Village of Gouverneur Office lobby at 33 Clinton St.

Donors may also call 287-1537 for pickup, or contact a local volunteer firefighter.

Donations allow the GFD to continue to deliver quality first responder service in the time of a fire or motor vehicle accident, as well as during other disasters.

The department has 60 members, and must meet state certification requirements.

There are also 15 Fire Explorers that are junior members through the Boy Scouts of America.

The department runs about 300 calls a years including fire, motor vehicle accidents, medical assists, weather-related incidents and a variety of other calls.

The department has set and open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The event is free and will include fire truck rides and fire extinguisher training . Hot dogs and soda will be available.
