GOUVERNEUR -- A Gouverneur Central School graduate hopes to replace long-time St. Lawrence County Legislator Alex MacKinnon, who represents Hammond, Macomb, Rossie, Fowler, Edwards and Pitcairn.
Joel LaPierre, a co-owner of RSI Roofing, Gouverneur, is a Republican. In a released statement he said New York State’s over regulation and high taxes are choking businesses in St. Lawrence County.
“I love the area,” he said in a release. “Our greatest asset is our kids. I want to reduce government and reduce taxes so we can build the economy and create more jobs so our children won’t have to move away.”
After 23 years in the roofing and construction business, LaPierre says he’s seen how difficult New York State makes it for local businesses to succeed and grow jobs. LaPierre says he wants to use his business experience to help St. Lawrence County government reduce costs and operate more like a business.
“I want my three daughters to have the same opportunities I have had to live and raise their families in Northern New York,” he said. “I want to get more involved in local affairs.”
LaPierre graduated from Gouverneur High School and studied business and economics at SUNY Potsdam. He worked summers during college before he went to work full-time in 1992 with his father as a roofer at RSI Roofing Inc.
La Pierre said that RSI Roofing has been ranked in the top 100 roofing companies in the U.S. since 2003, according to Roofing, Siding and Insulation Magazine.
LaPierre is a member of the St. James Parish and volunteers at St. James Elementary School.
LaPierre says the experience he has gained from his involvement in the Northern New York Builders Exchange, Associated Builders and Contractors, National Roofing Contractors Association, the Edwards Snowmobile Club and the National Rifle Association will help him serve the people of St. Lawrence County as a legislator.
LaPierre is married to the former Bridgette (Pistolesi) LaPierre, who is director of school enhancement at St. James Elementary School in Gouverneur. They have three daughters: Cassidy, 15; Corinne, 11; and Frances, 2.
He is the son of Roger LaPierre and Marilyn (Conklin) LaPierre.
