SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The Republican and Conservative parties have both unanimously nominated Saratoga Springs-area attorneys Ann Crowell and Robert Chauvin as their candidates to run for Justice of the Supreme Court in the Fourth Judicial District.

Both parties held their judicial district nominating conventions separately Thursday at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs.

Three state Supreme Court seats in the 11-county Fourth District are to be filled in the November election.

Judge John Lahtinen of Clinton County, an Associate Justice of New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, was unanimously nominated for re-election to the Supreme Court at both meetings. All three nominees are Republicans.

If elected, Crowell would be the first female Supreme Court Justice in the Fourth Judicial District.

Crowell currently serves as Confidential Law Clerk to State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Ferradino, and Chauvin is an attorney in private practice and recently retired from his post as Assistant District Attorney in Saratoga County.

The 4th Judicial District comprises Saratoga, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton, Washington, Warren, Hamilton, Essex, Clinton, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties.

The Supreme Court of the state of New York is the trial-level court. There is a Supreme Court venue in each county, and some of the smaller counties share judges. Most counties are grouped into judicial districts from which the judges are elected to 14-year terms.
