GOP Congressional challenger Doheny says poll showing him behind by 13 points affected by last week's Democratic convention

Republican congressional candidate Matt Doheny says a poll showing him behind by 13 points n his campaign against the incumbent says the results were affected by the Democratic Party convention last week.

"We all know polls are merely snapshots in time. Siena was in the field during the Democratic National Convention, so it’s laughable to think three nights of wall-to-wall television coverage didn’t have a bearing on these numbers,” Doheny.

The Siena College poll < http://www.siena.edu/uploadedfiles/home/sri/21st%20CD%20September%202012%20Poll%20Release%201%20--%20FINAL.pdf>, showing Democrat Bill Owens leading by 49 percent to 36 percent, was released this morning.

“And despite that coverage being overwhelmingly pro-Democrat at all times, my opponent still cannot manage to crack 50 percent,” Doheny said.

“Our internal polling shows a much closer congressional race with Mitt Romney prevailing in the presidential contest,” Doheny said.

The poll showed broad support for Owens, with likely voters seeing Owens as doing a better job than Doheny on six issues, by seven to 18 points in the newly redrawn 21st District that has a 15-point Republican enrollment edge.

The poll also tallied six percent for Green Party candidate Donald Hassig and eight percent undecided,

Dohny is reassured by the fact that two years ago at this time, a Siena poll showed Rep. Chris Gibson behind by 17 points, but Gibson won by nine points in the 20th Congressional District.

Doheny, a Watertown investor, is challenging Rep. Bill Owens of Plattsburgh for a second time this year.

Two years ago, Doheny lost in a three-way race that included Saranac Lake accountant Doug Hoffman.
