WATERTOWN – Republican candidate for Congress Matt Doheny has raised more than $300,000 for his campaign against Democrat Bill Owens, almost all of it in one month, and the vast majority from New York City-area bankers, lawyers, and others involved in business and finance.

The details are in his filing with the Federal Elections Commission dated today and covering the last three months of 2011.

The amount raised in the period is reported as $306,105. That combined with previous funds raised, minus expenses, gives Doheny about $316,000 for his campaign as of the first of the year.

Doheny's deputy campaign manager and spokesman Jude Seymour said, "I'll note two things: You'll be hard pressed to find many House candidates that post better numbers for the quarter than these. And Matt did almost all of his fundraising after Nov. 30 - so he it got done in a month's time."

The vast majority of contributions in the report are from individuals in the New York City metropolitan area. Others are from Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Syracuse and Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, mostly in amounts of $2,500 or $5,000.

We found two donors from within the 23rd Congressional District, which covers an area from Lake Ontario to Lake Champlain.

The donors describe themselves as lawyer, attorney, investor, finance, analyst, partner, director, homemaker, housewife, and describe their places of work as banking, investment, asset management, management consulting, financial services and law firms, among other things. One calls himself a lobbyist, there is one from an equipment rental company, there is a venture capitalist from Princeton, N.J., and a University of Michigan student who contributed $7,500.

The filing also lists more than $2 million in loans Doheny, a lawyer and former banker, made from his own funds to his unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 2009 and 2010, on which the report says no repayment has been made.
