Good weather helped make Madrid regatta a success; winners announced

MADRID -- Beautiful weather and calm water on the Grasse River made for a fun weekend of canoe and kayak racing at the 21st Madrid Canoe Regatta June 9 and 10 at the Madrid Community Park.

Racers came from as far away as Rochester, Montreal, Ottawa, Maine, Pennsylvania and throughout New York State. There were races of three, six, none and 13 miles held over two days. Some local winners were:

Canton: John and Gene Newman, Blanch Towne, Ben and Regina Budelmann, Paula and Peter Jensen-Moulton

Colton: James Plumley

Fine: Don Roy

Madrid: Bill Short, Tim Morse, Alyssa Gagnon

Potsdam: Will and Ellie Sigfried

Rensselaer Falls: Allen and Mary Kelly

The Moultons of Madrid are credited with organizing the fun event.
