SANTA CLARA -- The operator of the golf cart involved in the accident June 23 that claimed the life of a Santa Clara 19-year-old was charged on Wednesday.

Bernard Farley, 43, of Saranac Lake, was charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree-suspension, refusal to take a breath screening field test, inadequate headlights, and inadequate tail lamps.

The victim, Casey Mchugh, succumbed to his injuries while at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

Troopers say Mchugh was riding his skateboard east on Hole Pond Road in a supine position and was hit by the golf cart when he entered the intersection of Floodwood Road at about 10:25 p.m. June 23.

Mchugh was unconscious at the scene and transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, then airlifted to Fletcher Allen, police said.

Farley fled the scene before troopers arrived, they said. He was found at his residence several hours later.

After his arrest Wednesday, Farley was arraigned in Town of Santa Clara Court and released to the supervision of probation.

State police say they are continuing their investigation.
