Scarlett Friot shows a gift she received as she recovers from her injuries.

A GofundMe campaign and card avalanche has been launched to help a five-year-old girl who lost part of her leg following a lawnmower accident July 10 in Glennville.

Scarlett Friot is the daughter of Julie McLear-Friot, who graduated from Lisbon Central School and Darren Friot who graduated from Heuvelton Central School. Darren is an Army Reservist in the 411th Engineer Brigade who served a tour of duty in Iraq.

Close family friend Nicole Dority-LaPage, who works as a guidance counselor at Massena Central School, launched the campaign.

Following the July 10 accident doctors had to remove the lower portion of Scarlett’s right leg because the damage was too severe to fix. She also suffered a broken arm.

Scarlett has been discharged from Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and has begun the transition home.

Scarlett will be using a wheelchair temporarily while her arm heals, and will begin to learn to use a prosthetic leg as soon as she is ready, according to Dority-LaPage.

The family has insurance and remains hopeful that many of their medical bills will be covered. However, there are many associated costs that are not covered.

“We also know that the Friot family has a very long road ahead. Scarlett will be receiving a great deal of physical and occupational therapy as she transitions home. Children grow quickly, and Scarlett's prosthesis will continually need to be updated and replaced to grow along with her,” Dority-LaPage wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“There will be travel, lodging, childcare, and food expenses that Darren and Julie will incur. Perhaps most importantly, donations can also be used to help Julie and Darren access the most top-notch prosthetists and prosthetic devices that push the leading edges of technology, which may not be covered by insurance. We have been absolutely inundated by requests from loved ones near and far, pleading for something they can do to express their love and support for this family. Your donation to the Friot's will ensure that Scarlett's family can proceed in her rehabilitation without added financial stress.”

Dority-LaPage is also requesting letters and cards to be sent by my mail as a way of showing support for Scarlett as she adjusts to a new way of life.

“Kids love to get mail addressed to them! Any kind of card will do... kids' homemade cards will probably be a highlight,” she said.
