Funding sought for new combustion chamber at Massena’s Curran Renewable Energy; 20 extra jobs predicted

MASSENA -- A new combustion chamber at Curran Renewable Energy LLC, is among 21 “priority projects” that will be submitted for the second round of state funding by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

The project includes the purchase and installation of a new wood fire combustion chamber at the manufacturing facility.

In a progress report recently submitted to the state, the council claims the project would create 10 new jobs in harvesting, transportation and packaging by Curran and 10 more at Seaway Timber.

Installation of the chamber will enable Curran to burn green residual wood fiber to provide heat for the drying process in their wood pellet production, potentially increasing production efficiency by 20 percent.

According to the report, Curran’s wood pellet materials are purchased regionally and the company employs people throughout the region in harvesting and transporting biomass to the Massena plant.

The project would make more efficient use of the region’s wood supply and minimize waste of precious resources, the report said.

The project would make it possible for Curran to compete successfully with other fuels in supplying local consumers with sustainable energy products.
