Funding available to assist St. Lawrence County work sites in making healthy changes

The St. Lawrence Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grant is recruiting work sites, municipalities, and community-based organizations interested in making healthful changes for its employees and volunteers.

Recently, the Village of Massena adopted a Healthy Worksite Policy to address nutrition and physical activity opportunities for its employees.

With the adoption of a Worksite Wellness Policy, the Village of Massena was eligible for funding from the Health Initiative to purchase appliances for its breakroom, as well as several balance ball chairs.

Village of Massena employees noted that due to not having the proper facilities to store and prepare food, they typically made unhealthy lunch and snack choices. With the new refrigerator and toaster oven, they are able to pack and bring healthier foods from home.

“The balance ball chair we received from the Health Initiative’s grant has helped me considerably with my back as it forces me to practice better posture,” said Lisa Tyo, village employee. “I would definitely recommend this chair to others.”

The St. Lawrence Health Initiative is seeking additional work sites, municipalities, and community-based organizations wanting to make healthful changes.

The grant is funded by the New York State Department of Health.
