Free wounded deer tracking services available in St. Lawrence County

POTSDAM – A Potsdam-area man licensed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to track wounded deer with his trained dog is offering his services to area hunters.

Dan Snyder said he is available to help hunters who have wounded a deer but can’t find it.

His dog is trained for a blood trail and to track by scent if there is no blood to be found, he said.

Snyder said hunters should mark the spot where they last saw the blood of a wounded deer, or where the deer fell, and call him.

“The less human scent, the quicker we can pick up the scent of the deer and find it,” he said. “The deer can be tracked up to 12 hours from the time that it was wounded.”

Snyder said, last year, he had three calls and found three deer.

This program is at no charge to any hunter. Snyder is required by law to get the hunter’s name, address, and license number before the search is started.

He is also required by law to notify a conservation officer before and after the search.
