HEUVELTON -- A no-cost vaccine clinic for horses to protect against eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) Thursday, June 28.
The clinic is aimed at raising public awareness and preventing the spread of EEE, a mosquito-borne disease that killed at least 12 horses in central and northern New York last summer, and also claimed the life of a 4-year-old Oswego County girl.
The clinic Thursday evening in Heuvelton, and another in Oswego County, are funded by a grant Senator Ritchie obtained through the state budget, and in cooperation with local veterinarians. Horse owners wishing to participate should pre-register at Senator Ritchie’s website, www.ritchie.nysenate.gov.
There is no human vaccine for EEE, but the horse vaccine is nearly 100 percent effective.
In addition to the no-cost clinic, horse owners can also obtain a $15 discount on EEE vaccinations directly through their veterinarians.
The St. Lawrence County clinic is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28 at 210 Irish Settlement Rd. just north of Heuvelton.
