Free tax assistance offered in Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Ogdensburg for senior citizens, families and individuals

Multiple organizations in St. Lawrence County are offering free tax return assistance to senior citizens, families and individuals.

Students and faculty from SUNY Canton's Accounting and Business programs are helping individuals and families file their tax returns through the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The free tax assistance will be available by appointment between Feb. 1 and April 14 in SUNY Canton's Accounting, Business and Finance Center in Cook Hall Room 100.

The college's Financial Literacy Center and the School of Business and Liberal Arts sponsor the program as a service to those who cannot afford to visit an accountant or are unable to prepare their taxes on their own.

The VITA program allows trained student volunteers, under the supervision of tax certified faculty members, to apply their tax preparation skills and to help teach individuals how to correctly prepare their own taxes. Students can help those who have trouble filing their taxes, have not filed taxes before, or simply have tax-related questions. The free service is offered to both SUNY Canton students and income-qualified community members.

To schedule an appointment, contact 315-386-7328.

SUNY Canton has participated in the VITA program for more than 10 years.

Meanwhile, the free AARP Tax-Aide Program is again helping seniors and low- to middle-income people with their tax returns.

The program is open now and runs through April 15 at several locations in St. Lawrence County, including Massena, Potsdam, Canton and Ogdensburg.

The locations include:

• Massena, Community Center, 61 Beach Street.

• Potsdam, Midtown Apartments, Munson Street.

• Canton, Knights of Columbus, 30 Miner St.; Partridge Knoll, 30 Sullivan Dr.

• Ogdensburg, Rescue Squad Building, 1223 Pickering St.

The Potsdam Neighborhood Center is also offering free income tax assistance by appointment, Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, contact Kristal Hayes at 265-3920.
