MASSENA -- People in need in the Massena Central and neighboring school districts will be able to get free winter wear, a hot meal and help signing up for assistance at a Dec. 10 event.

“Connecting Our Communities” is scheduled for that day from 3 to 6 p.m. at Massena High School.

Part of the event will be free distribution of donated coats, hats, scarves, mittens, underwear and socks. People who want to contribute leading up to the event can drop off donations at Massena High School, J.W. Leary Junior High, or Madison, Nightengale, and Jefferson elementary schools. The drive is hosted by Student Council.

There will also be a pulled pork meal with sides, served by the Elks Club in working with the Freshman Academy.

The Community Schools program will partner with local agencies and groups for a resource fair.

“We’re hoping to connect students and families with service providers,” Community Schools Site Coordinator Kristin Collarusso-Martin said, adding that there will be services to help people get rent/utility assistance, sign up for food stamps or health insurance, and enroll kids in the Boys and Girls Club of Massena.

BOCES Adult Education program will also be there, and Collarusso-Martin said they are hoping to have the Department of Labor to help people who need a job.

“Community partners are interested in connecting with people … they can sign people up right there,” Collarusso-Martin said. “If people are strapped at the holidays and worried about paying their rent, keeping the light on, keeping the heat on, this is a really good time” to get help.

“Certainly Trinity or Holy Name families can participate, it doesn’t have to be Massena Central School families,” Superintendent Pat Brady said.

People seeking more information can find an event created on the Massena Central School Facebook page, or email Collarusso-Martin at kcmartin@mcs.k12.ny.us

The event is a coordination between the Community Schools program, student groups and the district’s Rapid Response Team. The team is a group of administrators, school counselors, a psychologist, members of the community and local organization to help respond to student emergencies. Many of those involved will be at the Dec. 10 event.
