Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks, parades, other events on tap in Morristown, Massena, Norwood, Hannawa, Gouverneur

Independence Day celebrations with fireworks, parades and more will take place in Morristown, Massena and Norwood.

Massena

The Massena fireworks and family fun day will include a variety of events and entertainment July 3 starting at 2 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Lawrence Centre, Route 37.

There will be bounce houses, selfies with superheroes, face-painting, balloon animals, a craft and vendor show, child safety ID kits by the Massena Masons, carnival games, animal rider races and safety demonstrations from the Massena Fire Department.

Atom Ghost will perform. Food vendors include Woody’s Snack Shack, Italian Affair, Rapidz and Sherry & Fred’s Newsstand. The fireworks show will start at 10:15 p.m.

As of press time, event coordinators said they were still waiting to nail down more performers and events. The family fun day will be in the St. Lawrence Centre parking lot, in front of the VA clinic.

The fireworks display will be visible from state Route 37 in front of the mall and Alcoa Road.

Morristown

A parade, fireworks, tractor pulls and more will be held in Morristown in celebration of Independence Day.

The event is sponsored by the Morristown Fire Department and is among St. Lawrence County’s largest draws of the year.

Fire Chief Kevin Crosby says the celebration begins Sunday July 3 with fireworks behind the fire station at dusk. Vendors will be onsite.

The fun continues Monday at 10 a.m. on Main Street, where local school bands will compete. Floats, fire trucks and more will also travel down the parade route.

At 11:30 a.m. volunteers will serve up barbecue chicken while visitors enjoy an antique tractor pull, kids games and a 50/50 raffle.

The fire department will also be serving up concessions including hot dogs, sausages, French fries, bread dough, snow cones, cotton candy and ice-cold beverages.

The event is one of fire department’s largest fundraisers of the yea.

“Bring your family and come and enjoy these great events and support the Morristown Fire Department,” Crosby said.

Norwood

In Norwood, the fire department will host their field day and fireworks July 3 and 4.

It starts July 3 with a Norwood Brass Firemen will play for free at the Village Green from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a block dance afterward with Six Foot Midget from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will also be refreshments, food and games of chance.

July 4 starts with a parade at 1 p.m. The Kawartha Kavaliers marching band are coming from Ontario to play in the procession.

After the parade ends at the firemen’s field on Morgan Street, the field day will commence with bounce houses, train rides and refreshments. There will be a demolition derby at 2 p.m. Lawnmower races start at 5:30 or 6 p.m. and go all night until the fireworks around 9:30 or 10 p.m. People can watch the fireworks from the field. Event coordinators say there is lots of parking.

There is a $3 admission to the field day, which covers all events.

The fire department is soliciting donations from local businesses to help pay for the event. Anyone interested in contributing can call their non-emergency line at 353-2570.

Hannawa Falls

In Hannawa Falls, the 32nd Robert Plumb Memorial Fireworks will be held at dusk, Saturday July 2 at Postwood Park.

Viewing spots are available along State Highway 56.

Donations to support the fireworks show can be made at Chips Store, The County Store and Jake’s on the Water, all on State Highway 56 in Hannawa Falls.

Gouverneur

The Gouverneur Fire Department will once again host a fireworks show at the fairgrounds on Monday, July 4, at dusk.

Depending on weather, fireworks should begin around 9:30 to 10 p.m.

Vendors will be selling food and trinkets at the fairgrounds and there will be a 50/50 raffle. Things get underway around 5 or 6 p.m.

There is no fee to attend, but donations are accepted to benefit the fire department.
